The government’s plan to establish a single health insurer came in for severe criticism from the opposition in parliament on Tuesday, October 30. The Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), Most-Híd and the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) believe that the plan is probably at odds with the constitution, disadvantageous from an economic viewpoint and could even be harmful to patients.
KDH leader Ján Figeľ told a joint news conference that the government of Robert Fico had already tried four times to solve problems in the health-care sector by taking unconstitutional measures. "We regard the present intention, very vehemently trumpeted by Prime Minister Robert Fico, also to be probably anti-constitutional; as such, it will be very expensive for Slovakia," Figeľ told the SITA newswire on Tuesday. “If the project is passed and implemented, the opposition is resolved to contest it at the Constitutional Court," said Most-Híd leader Béla Bugár.
