A COURT has ordered that the Slovak Information Service (SIS) pay Robert Krajňák Sk2.5 million (€70,000) in compensation for violating his rights. Back in 1995, Krajňák took out a full-page ad in the SME daily entitled "I was born in a totalitarian country and I don't want to die in one", a criticism aimed at the government of then-PM Vladimír Mečiar.
In the ad, Krajňák railed against the country's instability, its disrepute in the international community, and the general state of crisis. The ad also included a petition for a referendum demanding Mečiar's recall.
Krajňák later sued the SIS after finding out it had started following him. The SIS will likely appeal the verdict.
