SLOVAKIA is experiencing a real winter this year. Record low temperatures hit the country last week, in some places dropping to -30 degrees Celcius. The big freeze will not let up this week. We can still expect to wake up to flowers of frost on our windowpanes.
The weather will be stable, with little cloud cover this week. Temperatures will drop to -10 degrees Celcius overnight and stay below zero during the day. Winds are expected to be light, so it should be an ideal week for skiing. Ski conditions have not changed over the past seven days and new snow is expected at the end of the week.
Dogsled racing, which enjoys popularity in this country, is also taking place this winter. Dog teams from around Central Europe will compete in Donovaly from February 3 to 5. If you come to cheer them on, do not forget to wrap up warm!
On Saturday, the Veľká Rača Oščadnica ski resort continues its Becherovka ski show series. Apart from ski testing and bungee running you can expect to witness many fun competitions.
As the season rolls on, you can find fun events and discos in almost any of the larger ski resorts.
If you happen to be in the High Tatras this week, be sure to take the gondola up to the country's second highest peak, Lomnický štít (2,634 metres). With the weather forecast good you have a great chance of seeing the magic of snow-covered Slovakia, directly from Lady Winter's balcony.
