Four days after the first round of presidential elections and five days after the actual incident occurred, Slovak media reported that skinheads in Handlová (central Slovakia) attacked six Romanies on Friday evening, demolishing a pub in a gypsy suburb of the town.
In their report on public order during election day, the police did not mention the incident despite the fact that one of the Romanies suffered a brain concussion and had to be treated in a hospital. When questioned by media later, police confirmed that there was an incident but refused to provide details.
According to media reports, the skinheads continued to threaten to kill one of the Romanies even after emergency service personnel arrived at the bar. Local police said the skinheads were "detained and questioned".
Racially motivated attacks against Romanies in Slovakia happen with the greatest frequency in central Slovakia, with the most occurring in Prievidza and Banská Bystrica.
