The prospects of Prime Minister Robert Fico's Smer party returning to the Party of European Socialists (PES) are getting complicated, the Pravda daily wrote on September 26.

Statements by the leader of the junior coalition member SNS party, Ján Slota, about Hungarians and Hungarian politicians are not improving Smer’s chances shortly before the final PES verdict on the party's full-fledged membership.

Smer's membership in PES was suspended due to its alliance with the nationalist SNS.

The spokesman of the socialist faction in the European parliament, Armin Machmer, told the daily that PES will definitely deal with this issue on October 4. Fico's reaction to SNS will be decisive, Machmer said.
