Slovak National Party (SNS) chairman Ján Slota, who was penalised one month of his MP's salary for not attending sessions of the Parliamentary committee for human rights, minorities and the status of women, told journalists in Žilina on Thursday, November 12, that he views the move as revenge from the ethnic-Hungarian SMK party, the TASR newswire wrote.
SMK MP József Berényi, who chairs the committee, announced a day earlier that he has approached the parliamentary secretary, informing him that according to the law, Slota should lose one month's salary for not taking part in four sessions in one month.
According to Slota, this is the first time in 20 years that a chairman of a parliamentary committee has resorted to taking money away from an MP for absenteeism.
“I think that this is definitely revenge, because SNS has for the third time filed a complaint against SMK with the Prosecutor-General's Office for its anti-state and anti-Slovak activities. And, of course, also because we submitted a proposal to the Parliamentary mandate and immunity committee to resolve the issue of SMK MPs attending Hungary's Forum of the Carpathian Basin,” Slota said.
He also claimed that he didn't take part in two committee sessions because he was attending parliamentary sessions at the time. TASR
