The Czech Republic is considering linking its rail freight transport operator ČD Cargo with the Slovak state-operated joint-stock company Železničná Spoločnosť Cargo Slovakia. Czech Transport Minister Pavel Dobeš voiced interested in cooperation in the selection of a strategic partner for Cargo Slovakia after talks with his Slovak partner Minister Ján Figeľ (Christian Democratic Movement (KDH)), held on Tuesday, September 13, in Bratislava.
Dobeš said that his country was interested in future cooperation and joint steps, but he stated, as quoted by the SITA newswire: “At present, the steps that will be taken in this area are completely under the jurisdiction of the Slovak government. Of course, we will happily cooperate in this matter.”
He said a common solution was vital due to potential competitors like Germany or Russia. Chairman of the ČD Cargo Directors' Board, Czech former transport minister Gustav Slamečka, confirmed the company's interest in partnership with the Slovak rail freight transport provider. Figeľ has hailed the interest in Cargo Slovakia and highlighted the planned selection of a strategic partner which is part of the revitalisation scheme drafted for the company. The Transport Ministry has already opened a tender to seek a consultant that will help pick a partner for Cargo Slovakia. Bids will be opened on October 10.
