Slovakia is focusing on a bilateral meeting between Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák and his Hungarian counterpart Péter Balázs that is due to take place in the Slovenian town of Bled on Sunday, August 30, Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Peter Stano announced on August 27.
According to Stano, the two ministers, who will meet at an EU Strategic Forum, are set to talk about how bilateral Slovak-Hungarian relations could be improved.
Stano also said his ministry would not comment on a statement made by the head of the Hungarian President's Office's strategy and communications department, Ferenc Kumin, stating that Hungary was humiliated when Hungarian President László Sólyom was barred from entering Slovakia last Friday and must receive satisfaction for this. Sólyom was invited to the unveiling ceremony for a statue of Hungarian monarch King Stephen I in the town last Friday by the mayor of Komárno (Nitra Region), Tibor Basternák. However, the Slovak Government forbade him from entering Slovakia, thus preventing him from attending the ceremony and prompting a major cross-border diplomatic row.
