On March 12, Serbian Defence Minister Zoran Stankovič expressed his gratitude for Slovakia’s attitude toward the future status of the southern Serbian province of Kosovo.
According to Slovak Defence Minister Frantisek Kašický, it is impossible to support any degree of Kosovan independence without the consent of Belgrade.
Stankovič mentioned that he, as a representative of the Defence Ministry, would not comment on the Kosovo issue in order to be sure that his comments would not be perceived as problematic.
Slovakia should be careful not to isolate itself through its opinion on the question of Kosovo, the Slovak Foreign Minister Ján Kubiš said during his visit to Serbia on March 12. He added that Slovakia's interest should go along with the opinions of other EU member states. Ján Kubiš also met Serbian President Boris Tadič and Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Koštunica in Belgrade on March 12. The visit, which was initiated by Kubiš, concentrated on the southern Serbian province of Kosovo, Serbia’s European aspirations, and Slovakia offer to help Serbia in its integration efforts.
