Slovakia’s aviation sector will become part of the EU Emission Trading System (EU ETS) as of March, according to an amendment to the Emission Quotas Trading Act approved in parliament on February 9, the TASR newswire reported.
The amendment was passed in fast-tracked proceedings in reaction to reservations expressed by the European Union at the end of last year. The EU told seven member states including Slovakia they would be taken to court if they did not include the aviation sector in emissions-quota trading.
This amendment means that the companies will receive free CO2 emission quotas from the state, the TASR newswire wrote. Companies doing business in aviation that would like to be allocated emission quotas should send an application to the Environment Ministry by the end of March.
