If a Slovak citizen obtains state citizenship of another country they will no longer automatically lose their Slovak citizenship according to a proposed amendment to the State Citizenship Act approved by the Slovak government on Wednesday, January 26, the TASR newswire reported.
The initiative is aimed at returning to the applicable practices used before July 2010 when the government of Robert Fico adopted legislation in response to Hungary's dual citizenship act. According to that amendment adopted in 2010 anyone applying for the citizenship of another country would automatically lose Slovak citizenship.
If the government's latest decision is approved by parliament it will only be possible for a Slovak citizen to lose their citizenship if they apply to give it up.
