Road infrastructure, the Malý Krtíš industrial park, and cross-border cooperation with Hungary focused on development of tourism: these are the development priorities of the Veľký Krtíš district that were scheduled to be discussed at the Slovak cabinet's regular meeting on Wednesday, April 21, in the town of Veľký Krtíš in southern Slovakia, the SITA newswire reported.
According to a resolution prepared for the meeting, the cabinet plans to allocate €1.659 million to 17 investment activities in the district from its reserve, SITA wrote. According to an analysis submitted the meeting, this district with 46,000 inhabitants had a 24.74 percent unemployment rate in late January, which was the sixth highest among districts in Slovakia.
The rate of unemployment has been over twenty percent since 1993 and it is approximately 10 percentage points higher than the national average. A labour market problem is poor education and other weak points of the district include a low-quality and unfinished transport and technical infrastructure and missing railway connections, as well as the lack of standard quality drinking water. The only strength of the district’s economy is the Malý Krtíš industrial park with an overall area of 200,000 square meters. At present there are two investors that employ 550 people.
