A SLOVAK man who was being sought by police over alleged insurance fraud has been apprehended in Cuba, the TASR newswire learned from Martin Waldl of the Police Corps Presidium’s communications and crime prevention department on October 9.
“Following close cooperation with the Cuban Embassy in Slovakia and the Slovak Embassy in Cuba, the first extradition of a person from Cuba to Slovakia took place today,” said Waldl, as quoted by TASR.
According to Waldl, the man - identified only as Radovan S. - made fraudulent insurance claims over fictitious traffic accidents. The man received €141,000 from insurance companies using bogus claims and, along with accomplices, placed claims worth another €27,000.
The Nitra District Court made out an international arrest warrant for the man on March 21 and Slovakia’s National Crime Agency worked with Interpol in tracking the man down. He was remanded in custody in a Slovak prison on October 9. If convicted, Radovan S. may spend up to 15 years in jail, according to TASR.
