THE COALITION of four parties that agreed to run jointly in the upcoming regional elections in the Nitra region in order to beat the current ruling party there - the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK)- is under threat because of a call to expand their numbers.
One of the members of the coalition, Smer, has called on its partners - the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union, the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (SDKÚ), and the Christian Democratic Movement - to also invite the Free Forum (SF), the Slovak National Party, the New Citizen's Alliance, and the Movement for a Democracy (HZD), to join the coalition, the Pravda daily wrote.
"If we don't all join together we will lose and the SMK will win again," said Smer's chairman, Robert Fico.
However, reaching an agreement on such a wide coalition of parties may prove difficult. The HZDS said it did not want the HZD in the coalition, while it is likely that the SDKÚ would not agree to join up with the SF, set up by the former SDKÚ members.
Smer said it would give its partners until the end of July to consider the wider partnership. If no agreement is reached, Smer would re-evaluate its membership in the coalition.
