Figeľ, who became the Slovak Christian Democrats (KDH) party leader (replacing Pavol Hrušovský) last Saturday, told Barosso that he would like to take up his new post in Slovakia on October 1.

The EU Commission President is expected to convey this information to the European Council and the European Parliament (EP) and to call on the Slovak Government to nominate a candidate for the vacated post. The new Commissioner would be responsible for Figel's portfolio until the end of the current mandate.
