Rudolf Chmel, Slovakia’s deputy prime minister for human rights and ethnic minorities, met Germany’s ambassador to Slovakia, Axel Hartmann, on Tuesday, September 28. The two discussed the amendment to the State Language Law and other legislative proposals.
Chmel informed Hartmann about the use of language by Slovakia’s ethnic minorities and the support and development of the cultures of ethnic minorities in the country. The two also spoke about a plan to establish a German school in Slovakia for ethnic Germans. Ambassador Hartmann appreciated that at present relations between the German minority in Slovakia and the rest of the population are very good.
With regard to the upcoming twentieth anniversary of the declaration of the Slovak parliament from February 12, 1991, by which Slovakia apologised for the deportation of much of its German minority from the country after WWII and rejected the principle of collective guilt, they decided to commemorate the event together.
