SLOVAK diplomat Ján Kubiš visited Kyrgyzstan in mid April on a UN fact-finding mission to report on an uprising that has led to the overthrow of the central Asian state's government, the Reuters newswire reported.
Kubiš, a former Slovak foreign minister who now heads the UN Economic Commission for Europe, is acting as a special envoy of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. He was due to meet “constitutional authorities and representatives of relevant political groups” before flying to New York to brief Ban.
Kubiš is an expert on the region, having served as UN special envoy to Tajikistan in 1998-99 and European Union special representative for central Asia in 2005-06.
