The first Slovak environmental terrorist, Ladisalv K., was sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Košice District Court, for terrorism and other crimes. He will serve the sentence in a maximum-security prison.
His attorney appealed the verdict, claiming the defendant’s mental condition was not taken into consideration. Ladislav K. Was charged with several crimes, with terrorism being the most serious. On December 28, 2011, he placed an explosive device into a metal trash bin near the entrance to a fast-food restaurant on Protifašistických bojovníkov Street in Košice, consisting of a metal tube filled with explosive powder and nails. The prosecutor claimed, as quoted by the SITA newswire, that the faulty construction of the device was the reason why there were no fatalities or injuries. Ladislav K. also wrote threatening letters and sent a bomb in the form of a book to a Košice veterinarian who euthanises dogs.
As Slovakia has no expert on terrorism, Czech Ivo Svoboda from the University of Defence in Brno, testified before court that the activities and crimes of the defendant have the fundamental signs of extremism and environmental terrorism. The expert found that Ladislav K.’s mental state was not perfect, but he was fully cognisant of his actions and their consequences.
