FARMERS’ earnings are rising faster than earnings in most other sectors in Slovakia. In 2004, farmers' earnings went up by 10 percent, according to the daily SME.
This was the fourth largest rise in the whole economy. Slovakia's neighbours recorded a very similar trend.
The chairman of the Agro Chamber, Ivan Oravec, does not believe the growth is because of Slovakia's EU entry or the subsidies they receive.
Oravec puts the growth down to there being fewer farmers and the increase in hours they work. Last year's good harvest also played its part in the farmers’ good fortune, according to SME.
