Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák opened a new Slovak Embassy in Podgorica, capital of Montenegro, on Tuesday, June 15, ministry spokesman Peter Stano announced, as reported by the TASR newswire.
"This is a significant moment in our relations," said Lajčák during the opening ceremony, which was attended by high-ranking Montenegrin officials, diplomats, Slovak compatriots and the media. He added that the opening of the embassy in Podgorica would be a tool for intensifying political and economic contacts between the two countries.
It will also serve the thousands of Slovak tourists who visit Montenegro every year. Montenegrin Foreign Affairs Minister Milan Roćen praised the help and support that Slovakia provides to Montenegro, and pointed to the role of both Lajčák and the current head of the representative office in Podgorica, František Lipka, in the referendum in 2005 based on which Montenegro obtained its independence.
Slovakia was among the first countries to recognise Montenegro as a free and sovereign state on June 13, 2006, setting up diplomatic ties with it on the same day – June 28, 2006 – that it was accepted into the United Nations, TASR reported.
