The Green Party of Slovakia says the current government does not have the moral right to celebrate Earth Day, observed on April 22.
"The current government continuously demonstrates that preservation of the environment in favour of the majority of inhabitants is not its priority. This is documented by recent cases that endanger or even damage the environment, such as the construction of a waste dump in the town of Pezinok near a residential area, the proposed re-zoning of the High Tatras National Park, the logging permitted in the most strictly protected areas of Slovakia, the weakening protection of biotopes through the amendment to the Act on Nature and Landscape Preservation, the classification of information about nuclear power plants, and many others. The proverbial nail in the coffin was the decision to close the independent Environment Ministry and pass its agenda to the Agriculture Ministry," Green Party chairman Peter Pilinský said on April 21, as quoted by the SITA newswire.
