Building highways in Slovakia costs more than in any other European Union country. According to EU estimates one kilometre of a Slovak highway costs €12.5 million, wrote the daily SME.
In comparison, one kilometre of a highway in the Czech Republic costs €8.4 million, and in Italy the figure is just €2.7 million.
The European Commission published the costs in reply to a question from a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). The EU average for the cost of building one kilometre of highway is €6.8 million in the EU15, and €9.1 million in the ten new EU countries.
Slovenia and Hungary, together with Slovakia, have the most expensive highways. Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Holland, and Austria form the second most expensive group.
The differences in cost are explained by local conditions like population density, the local environment and ways of estimating cost. According to the Commission, the cost needs to be estimated very carefully, as there is no unified methodology and data.
