A Slovak-Hungarian Commission for Ethnic Minorities is meeting in Budapest on Friday, July 17, to hash out divergent views on the recently-passed amendment to Slovakia’s State Language Act, the foreign affairs ministry told the TASR newswire on July 16.
The commission is one of twelve established to discuss and implement different aspects of the Slovak-Hungarian Basic Treaty signed in 1995.
This is the appropriate platform for tackling bilateral issues between Slovakia and Hungary," said Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák, who reiterates that the two countries should work out problems between themselves rather than embroil European Union institutions in them.
The amendment to the State Language Act is being criticised, particularly by ethnic Hungarian Slovaks, because they say it limits the rights of ethnic minorities to use their native tongue in official dealings with authorities. TASR
