The expected winner, the Russian team, won in ice hockey on the Day of Victory in the WWII, May 9, against the rejuvenated Slovak team by a score of 3:1 but the Russian coach Ilya Kovalchuk said this happened only after a tough fight, Sme daily reported.
The Slovak team brought a good performance under the leadership of its new coach from Canada, Glen Hanlon, at the packed Lanxess Arena in the German city of Cologne.
The best Slovak player in this match was goalkeeper Peter Budaj who kept hope alive for his team’s victory for two-thirds of the playing time. Until the very last minutes, Slovakia seemed able to achieve a tie but the last minute changed the result.
On May 11 Slovakia plays against Belarus, the Sme daily wrote on its website.
