Slovak Justice Minister Štefan Harabin has confirmed he will run for the post of Supreme Court president. He was speaking shortly before the start of a cabinet meeting on May 20.
Responding to a question about whether he would accept the nomination for the post from the Spišská Nová Ves District Court, he first said: “Naturally, it is an honour for me and I am considering it.” Answering a follow-up question about when he would definitively decide, Harabin stated: “We can say it is actually binding for me and I am considering it very seriously.” He then said that he would make a definitive decision regarding his candidacy in a very short time. Asked whether it would be a question of months or weeks, Harabin finally said “I can tell you: yes,” and confirmed that he would become a candidate for the post of the Supreme Court president.
Minister Harabin will not have to give up the ministerial post during the candidacy, since the law on conflict of interest only bans concurrent constitutional functions. Harabin served as Supreme Court president from 1998 to 2003. He became Justice Minister in 2006. He is a nominee of Vladimír Mečiar's Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS). SITA
