A REGIONAL survey of the dietary habits of Slovak children from 4 to 14 years of age has shown that the ideal breakfast, in the eyes of the kids themselves, would consist of ice-cream, chocolate and potato chips.

The survey, carried out by the State Health Institute in central Slovakia's Nitra region, quizzed 65 children on their favourite food and drinks, and found that nearly 11 per cent of the young respondents eat only candy for breakfast, while 29 per cent do not eat any breakfast at all.

The survey found that the children's least favourite dishes were spinach and fish. According to Emília Sobotková from the Nitra institute, the children protested having to eat healthy food while their parents consumed tasty but less recommended dishes.

"Children often said that their parents eat all the good things - salty, spicy and fatty foods. A child, however, is not a miniature adult, and we have to teach them what a healthy diet is," said Sobotková.
