Men in Slovakia expect salaries 31 percent higher than women, Lucia Burianová, the spokesperson of the Profesia.sk internet job portal told the TASR newswire.
According to the data released by the portal, men on average expect gross monthly salaries reaching €863 while women expect only €660 per month. Burianová points out however that comparing these average expectations does not prove discrimination as it is necessary to compare salaries of men and women in the same positions.
"In this case, men earn 14 percent more than their female colleagues," she said. The largest differences occur when salaries of employees with technical school education (without secondary school graduation) are compared (41 percent).
Various age groups also show differences in salaries. The category aged 35-44 is the least equal in terms of gender, with men having salaries 39 percent higher. "Smaller differences are recorded at the beginning (17 percent) and at the end (14 percent) of the career span," said Burianová.
Volksbank analyst Vladimir Vano points out that comparing average salaries of men and women presents a big problem in methodology. "Comparing people in a given age group can never fully and appropriately factor in the differences in the length of practice, career gradient, qualifications ...," he told TASR, adding that another important factor may be the choice of profession. In this case, greater job security can generally compensate for the lower salary. "Public administration vs private sector or clerical jobs vs sales," he saiid as examples.
