Construction and Regional Development Minister Igor Štefanov (a nominee of the Slovak National Party (SNS)) will face an attempt by the opposition to dismiss him in parliament on Wednesday, May 20, at 14:30, the second such move against him since he took up his post in April.
Representatives of the three main opposition parties – the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), Christian-Democratic Movement (KDH) and Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) – submitted 31 signatures to parliament on Friday, May 15. Pursuant to the law, the speaker was obliged to convene an extraordinary parliamentary session within seven days with a no-confidence vote in the minister on the agenda.
The opposition MPs’ initiative follows their unsuccessful appeal to Prime Minister Robert Fico to sack Štefanov. Štefanov has been the ‘right-hand man’ of former construction and regional development minister Marian Janušek, who had to resign from his ministerial post over a dubious tender worth €120 million that was won by a consortium including two companies – Zamedia and Avocat – reportedly close to SNS leader Ján Slota.
