Slovakia’s ruling Smer party has initiated proceedings in parliament to dismiss opposition MP Veronika Remišová (Slovensko) from her role as chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Conflicts of Interest, amid an escalating dispute over Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák’s failure to declare a property in Croatia.
At a press briefing on Tuesday, Smer MP Ján Richter accused Remišová of breaching both the Constitution and the law. While affirming that the committee chairmanship should remain with the opposition, he argued that Remišová must be replaced. “We respect that the post belongs to the opposition and that it was agreed it would go to the Slovensko party. But we cannot accept that Ms Remišová continues in the role, because she broke the law,” Richter said, without providing details of the alleged violation.
In addition, Kaliňák has proposed that Remišová be fined the equivalent of 12 months’ salary — approximately €80,000. Remišová has described the move as “Gestapo-like tactics”.
“Robert Kaliňák’s mafia-style revenge will affect me, my children, and my family,” Remišová said.
With the coalition controlling the committee, the odds are stacked against the MP — not the minister.
