Members of Slovakia’s parliament and cabinet ministers will have to live with lower salaries than what they currently receive, based on an agreement made by the leaders of the governing coalition of four centre-right parties, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) and Most-Híd at their Coalition Council meeting on Wednesday, August 11, reported the TASR newswire.
It was agreed that each of the party caucuses should propose how much to trim their salaries. “I leave it up to their assessment, to their conscience,” Prime Minister Iveta Radičová (SDKÚ) told the SITA newswire after the council meeting. First, she will discuss it with the coalition members.
“The next step should also be a discussion with the opposition. It is up to them, whether they join or not,” she stated.
Radičová will also propose a reduction of salaries for the cabinet ministers. However, she did not specify how much of a pay cut she is willing to take herself. The agreed-upon changes in the remuneration of parliamentary deputies will be then be presented to the Coalition Council by the Speaker of the Parliament, Richard Sulík (SaS).
