Slovak MPs have launched a petition, with which they would like to show support for the UK to remain in the European Union, MPs Martin Klus of Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), Katarína Cséfalvayová of Sieť and Jozef Viskupič of OĽaNO-NOVA said at a press conference in Bratislava on April 28.

“As citizens of Slovakia and the EU we believe that Great Britain will remain in the EU,” Klus said, as quoted by the TASR newswire. “The UK is an important EU member and its departure would mean major financial, political and social damages not only to the UK itself but also to other EU-member states.”

MPs will also be able to sign the petition via the internet on Facebook. MPs Edita Pfundtner of Most-Híd and Martina Šimkovičová of (We Are Family-Boris Kollár) have already signed it.

Klus warned that Britain’s exit would mean a great deal of problems for the entire EU, including Slovakia. It would also be felt by Slovaks living, studying and working in the UK.

Cséfalvayová emphasized the need of Slovakia’s pro-European orientation. Britain should stay because of two things: because of the tens of thousands of Slovaks in the UK and because of the idea of European integrity and unity, according to her.

A British exodus could have devastating consequences for the entire EU, according to Viskupič.

“This moment might trigger a domino effect, and that’s why we want to send a message that it’s of our utmost interest that Britain stays in the UK,” Viskupič said, as quoted by TASR, adding that the initiative crosses the whole political spectrum – except far-right Kotleba-People’s Party Our Slovakia.
