Fines for violations of the State Language Act will not be abolished, as Slovak MPs rejected an amendment proposed by Most-Híd party MPs Zsolt Simon and Lészló Nagy to this effect at its first reading on Wednesday, September 16.
Nagy and Simon also unsuccessfully proposed that a provision prescribing the use of Slovak on commemorative plaques and public memorials should be dropped, the TASR wrote. Current legislation states that such texts have to be written in the state language, which must also come first if texts in other languages are included. In addition, writing in other languages must not appear in larger letters than the Slovak version.
