The Slovak National Gallery (SNG) in Bratislava is celebrating its 60th anniversary on July 29. It was founded by the Ministry of Culture on July 29, 1948 on the initiative of Slovak journalist and writer Laco Novomeský.
"Many creative ideas and professionally and publicly interesting events, many satisfied visitors, including the young, and more money for buying new artworks for the collections" were the wishes expressed by SNG general director Katarína Bajcurová on the anniversary. Bajcurová told the TASR newswire that she also wants ongoing reconstruction work to continue, so that "the SNG will have new, European-standard premises."
The Gallery, which has almost 60,000 artworks, has prepared three exhibitions with more than 700 representative pieces in order to mark the anniversary. These are: the exhibition entitled One Hundred and Eleven Works of Art from the SNG collection; an Open for 60 Years exhibition, which looks at the history, purpose and collections of the Gallery; and an All About the Museum exhibition, which features the works of Slovak artists and their relationship to the museum.
Apart from works produced by young artists in recent years, this exhibition presents selected pieces from the period ranging from the second half of the 1960s until the 1980s. TASR
