Strong winds and rugged terrain have stalled operations as firefighters battle a forest fire that started Sunday in the Slovak Paradise. As of Tuesday, only two helicopters were in operation and most of the firefighters had to leave the area because of dense smoke.

The head of the air firefighters Ján Šuba told the Pravda daily that the fire is out of control. "For now we can do nothing, only try to prevent the fire from spreading inside the Slovak Paradise."

The fire is burning between the Sokol and Koč mountains.

At present, no homes are threatened by the fire, which was apparently caused by lighting.

On Tuesday, another forest fire broke out in Poráč in the district of Spiššská Nová Ves.
