The Slovak parliament's culture and media committee has received the first application for the post of director of the newly-established public broadcaster, Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS), the committee's secretariat told the TASR newswire on January 22, declining to specify the person’s name. Additionally, two people have submitted applications for seats on RTVS's nine-member board but no details were released.
"The envelopes are still sealed; the [selection] commission won't open them until next week," said committee representative Eva Discantini. The deadline for submitting applications, both for the RTVS head and for RTVS council members, will expire on Tuesday, January 25.
Media have been speculating on a number of possible candidates for the head of RTVS including Peter Abrahám from the Slovak Broadcasting Council (RVR), interim RTVS director Miloslava Zemková, former president Rudolf Schuster's spokesman Ján Fule, and former Slovak Television head Milan Materák. In addition, the general director of the TASR newswire, Jaroslav Rezník, has been involved in a project about the organisation of the combined public-service media.
Culture Minister Daniel Krajcer said on January 20 that he will give his opinion on the best candidate for RTVS director after the list of candidates is made public next week, saying he will choose strictly according to professional criteria.
