SLOVAK PRESIDENT Ivan Gašparovič and Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan left for New York to attend the 59th General Assembly of the United Nations on September 20.
There they will seek support for Slovakia's bid to be elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period 2006-2007, news wire TASR reported.
Slovakia is so far the only candidate for a regional seat that represents 22 countries from eastern Europe. It sought the post for the period 2000-2001, but lost out to Ukraine.
The UN is due to vote on this issue in spring 2005, and Slovakia is believed to stand a strong chance of success.
The president will hold bilateral talks with the presidents of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lithuania, and Slovenia. He also will attend a reception hosted by US President George W Bush.
