The date was announced on July 2 by the Speaker of Slovak Parliament Pavol Paška (Smer). A possible second round will have to be announced by Paška only for those regions in which a candidate fails to get an absolute majority of votes.

Currently, Slovakia’s eight self-governing regions have 412 representatives and their number can be changed only 65 days before the elections at the latest. As the Slovak system is based on receiving a majority, a nominee who gets such a majority in his/her electorate obtains the mandate.

“I want to ask citizens to seriously consider their participation in the elections, as we have had a bad experience with the turnout in the past. Regions in Slovakia spend millions of euros and they do have vast powers,” Paška told TASR.
