Slovak rescuers save French diplomat

SHORTLY after a rescue team from Slovakia landed in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on January 24, its members were quickly called into action, with the task of helping to extinguish a burning car occupied by the French ambassador to Haiti.

Slovak rescuers managed to help the ambassador escape from the burning car without any serious injuries, the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the media.

Slovakia dispatched an 18-member rescue and health-care team, along with a field hospital and humanitarian material aid, to Haiti on January 22, via Paris, in cooperation with the French Interior Ministry. Haiti suffered a devastating earthquake on January 12.
