THE CASE of three Slovak Roma citizens who were barred from entering a café in Michalovce due to their skin colour in 2005 could go before the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the SITA newswire reported.
Ľubica Adamová, Tibor Kešeľ and Lucia Pužová complained that even though Slovak courts ruled that they had suffered discrimination, they were not granted financial compensation.
Moreover, the plaintiffs also criticised the length of the proceedings, which continued for about four years.
The UN committee has not decided yet whether it will deal with the complaint. However, even if it rules against Slovakia, the country would not have to pay compensation, the Slovak Foreign Ministry stated.
“The rulings of the committee have the form of recommendations for the contracting states,” said the ministry, as quoted by SITA.
