A SUCCESSFUL professor of microbiology, Ján Vilcek, 72, donated $105 million to New York university where the scientist still works. The donation is one of the largest in US education history.
Vilcek, a Bratislava native, completed his studies in the Slovak capital. "Memories of Slovakia will never fade," the professor told the daily Pravda.
Vilcek left Bratislava for New York 40 years ago. The medicine faculty at New York University hired him. "For the university, it was a risk [to hire an unknown Slovak], but for me it was a unique opportunity to start my new career," said the professor.
