State secretary of the Ministry of European and Foreign Affairs Peter Burian met Vienna-based Iranian Ambassador to Slovakia Hassan Tajik to discuss resolving the case of the eight Slovak paragliders who have been detained in Iran for a month on suspicions of espionage. Their talks stressed the need for intensive communication and a constructive approach focused on bringing about a speedy resolution of the case.
"We continue to pursue diplomatic efforts aimed at releasing the people arrested," said head of the ministry's press department Peter Susko for the TASR newswire on Monday, July 8. Burian's meeting with the Iranian official follows a meeting between Tajik and Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák in Bratislava last week.
The group of eight Slovaks and one Iranian national was apprehended a month ago near the central Iranian city of Isfahan, where facilities for processing and enriching uranium are located. They were detained for taking pictures of the facilities from hang-gliders.
