All three gynaecological clinics of the Teaching Hospital in Bratislava will stop providing abortions as of February 1, 2011, even for abortions before the 12th week of pregnancy which are permitted by law in Slovakia, the Pravda daily reported on January 25.
Doctors from Bratislava’s hospitals confirmed to the daily they will stop performing abortions after a “mysterious unofficial decision” that they must abide with, despite the fact that not all of the over 80 gynaecologists working in these hospitals conscientiously object to the procedure.
Health Minister Ivan Uhliarik of the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) did not respond to Pravda’s story nor did anyone else from KDH. Coalition partners Most-Hid and Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) have however objected to termination of the procedure at the hospitals.
“If it is proved that he did not act in line with valid legislation, we will take further steps,” Martin Poliacik of SaS told Pravda.
