Following strong criticism by opposition parties regarding the apparently imminent financial close of the first package of public-private partnership (PPP) projects for construction of the D1 highway, Slovak Transport Minister Ľubomír Vážny has rushed to label their statements "pre-election demagogy and a scarecrow."
On Tuesday, April 27, the opposition called on the minister not to close the PPP package just before the general election (which is due on June 12) because it is financially disadvantageous for Slovakia, the SITA newswire wrote.
The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) even warned the minister that in event that the package is financially closed it would file a criminal motion not only against him, but also against Prime Minister Robert Fico and Finance Minister Ján Počiatek, on suspicion of abuse of a public official's powers. Vážny merely commented anyone who knows about a crime is obliged to file a criminal motion.
