IN TRIBUTE to the upcoming Summer Olympic Games, the stations of the London Underground will be renamed after famous athletes. Two stations on the Piccadilly line will be named after twin brothers Peter and Pavol Hochschorner, Slovakia’s very successful white-water slalom champions.
The Sme daily wrote that North Ealing station will be temporarily renamed Peter Hochschorner and the next one, in the direction from Cockfosters to Uxbridge – normally Park Royal – will bear the name Pavol Hochschorner. Following the Slovak twins, the next station (Alperton) will be renamed Štěpánka Hilgertová, after the Czech kayaking legend.
A total of 361 London public transport stations will be renamed to honour champions of past Olympic Games. Michael Phelps will be the most prominent as the main transport junction, called Stratford until now, will bear his name. Instead of familiar names like Piccadilly Circus, Baker Street or Knightsbridge, stations will be named Jesse Owens, Carl Lewis and Ian Thorpe.
The terminal station at Heathrow airport will temporarily bear the name of Australian rower James Tomkins and other stations will be called Emil Zátopek after the late Czech runner; Roman Šebrle, a Czech decathlon athlete and Olympic winner; Lionel Messi; Michael Jordan, Usain Bolt and Roger Federer.
