“It is good news that the agreement on founding an emergency fund for Africa will be signed at the EU and African countries summit in November, as it will help solve the causes of migration directly on the African continent,” State Secretary of the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry Igor Slobodník said, as quoted by the SITA newswire.
Slovakia will contribute €500,000 to the African fund.
It will also allocate €3 million for the fund for Syria, €600,000 for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, €400,000 for the International Organisation for Migration, €400,000 for UNICEF, €300,000 for the UN World Food Programme, and further €300,000 for the Council of Europe Development Bank.
“In regard to the Syria fund which directly helps refugees, it is necessary to channel the finances into the most affected transit countries, including the western Balkans,” Slobodník added, as quoted by SITA.
The money from the fund is used to integrate Syrian refugees and help them with their future life. Currently, it is used to help Syrian children in Turkey, as well as to finance the regional programme for university students in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, aid unemployed Syrian refugees, training and community activities. The ultimate aim is to use it to restore Syria after the war, SITA reported.
