Slovakia is in the last third of developed countries when it comes to giving money to the education sector, according to a study published by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) on September 18.
Each Slovak student receives less than half of the OECD average, the Pravda daily wrote on September 19.
The wealthiest countries spend Sk180,000 per student every year from elementary school until university. Slovakia spends only Sk74,000.
Slovakia also trailed all of its neighbouring countries from the Visegrad Four group (Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic), which spend about Sk100,000 per student each year.
The funding situation in Slovak schools will not significantly improve next year - Sk53 billion was allocated for the sector in the state budget draft, which is only Sk2 billion more than this year.
