Slovakia is to sign a new agreement with Hungary on the common state border, Alena Koišová from the Interior Ministry press department told the TASR newswire.
The first round of talks pertaining to the new agreement will take place in Budapest in November. The two sides will consider the reciprocal exchange of certain areas - handing over one area in exchange for another of equal size. An agreement of this kind was signed between Slovakia and Poland in July 2005, when the two countries exchanged areas totalling 2,969 square metres.
The Interior Ministry has already submitted for comments a proposal for delegation members chosen to prepare a new agreement on the state border between Slovakia and Hungary. The Slovak-Hungarian border was first established in 1921-25. Since then several changes have been made to the 655-kilometre frontier. As data pertaining to the original border map are not clearly arranged anymore, it will be necessary to create a new one, Koišová said. The present border is defined in the Agreement Between the Czechoslovak Republic and Hungary, which dates back to 1956, and by several additional bilateral agreements. The new agreement will be prepared by the Interior Ministry in co-operation with the Environment, Foreign Affairs, Agriculture and Transport Ministries, as well as cartography and land register authorities.
