Slovakia and Turkey will establish a committee to explore the possibility of cancelling the visa requirement for Slovak tourists visiting Turkey as well as liberalising visa requirements for Turkish citizens visiting Slovakia, it was jointly announced on Tuesday, January 25, by Slovak Foreign Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda and Turkey’s Minister for European Affairs and negotiator for Turkey’s EU application Egemen Bagis.
“It would be great if we did this by the summer,” Dzurinda said, as quoted by the TASR newswire. Slovaks travelling to Turkey currently need to get 30-day visas. Bagis said that more than 19,000 Slovaks paid a visit to his country and so more must be done in order to support tourism. “I welcome this idea to liberalise the visa regime,” he said. He also thanked Dzurinda for Slovakia’s consistent support of Turkey’s ambition to join the EU. According to Dzurinda, Slovakia stands ready to offer its own experience of the integration process and is delighted to see that Turkey is on the road to joining Europe.
