The number of holidaymakers in Slovakia in the first half of 2012 rose compared to the same period in 2011 both in terms of domestic tourists (up 5.6 percent) and foreign tourists (up 1 percent), the Slovak Tourist Board (SACR) announced on Wednesday, September 12.
"Given the fact that the statistics last year were heavily influenced by the Ice Hockey World Championship [in Bratislava and Košice], the slight increase in the number of visitors is good news for Slovak tourism," said SACR’s PR manager Zuzana Nemcová, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
Nonetheless, SACR regrets that there were fewer tourists from neighbouring countries, even though the fall was offset by visitors from more distant countries.
"The number of Czech tourists fell by 0.6 percent year-on-year, for example, while there were 4.7 percent fewer Poles and 9 percent fewer Hungarians," said Nemcová. "On the other hand, the increase in the number of tourists from German-speaking countries was gratifying, as there were 1.1 percent more Germans and 4.6 percent more Austrians visiting Slovakia," she said, adding that mid-season urban tourism and spa tourism featured in the good results.
