DEPUTY Foreign Minister József Berényi says Slovakia's stance on starting accession talks with Croatia is unchanged: Slovakia backs Croatia's bid. However, Berényi confirmed that a majority of EU countries are demanding that Croatia first extradite General Ante Gotovina, the fugitive wanted by the ICTY in The Hague, before talks can begin.

Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader recently admitted that General Gotovina could still be in Croatian territory, the SITA news agency wrote. Berényi responded by saying that Zagreb must now act.

General Gotovina stands accused of war crimes during the Croatian-Serbian armed conflict.
